Polinós

The bridge between young people and politics

Briefing

Polinós has emerged as a way of introducing young people to the concepts of politics and citizenship, with illustrated cards with easy-to-understand language and journeys designed to gradually consolidate their repertoire. The project teaches about issues beyond institutional politics, also focusing on social movements and other forms of citizen expression, always aiming at the following problem:

How can we educate young Brazilians between 15 and 20 years old in order to make them politically active citizens?

Research

The lack of interest in politics among brazilian young people is alarming. This feeling of detachment from political issues arises from the way they are usually presented: with inaccessible language and requiring a broad repertoire for complete understanding. The following data based the project's concern:

  • Young people between the ages of 16 and 20 represent 16 million Brazilians;

  • In the 2020 elections, around 20% of these young people abstained from voting;

  • Before mass publicity campaigns, less than 12% of citizens aged between 16 and 17 year olds in São Paulo took out a voter registration card for the 2022 elections;

  • 80% of young Brazilians had no faith in politics.

Development

Once the research had been consolidated, the team set about mapping the platforms in flowcharts, designing screens, prototyping the first versions and testing them, standardizing elements and documenting how the software worked.

Results

Polinós is a digital platform for political education, designed for young people.

The development culminated into an informative website with a distinguished element: its card presentation. Unlike commonly available political content, the cards are panels about a certain matter, arranged for a scroll-down reading, mixing accessible verbal language with several graphic resources - such as illustrations, icons, photos, and memes.

Besides, the website structure allows its users to learn at their own pace and choose topics in their preffered ways. One can find cards by exploring the newest added content, by searching for specific subjects or by following through a thematic path.
